I’ll be the first to admit that I am in desperate need of a new hobby. But this weekend, I spent some time analyzing data from our recent survey, the State of M&A Integration Effectiveness, related to synergies. My purpose was to bring to light additional insights regarding what specific integration practices executives can focus on to ensure they are driving maximum synergies in their post-deal integration efforts.

Do you have an integration project (or a work-stream within an integration) that is OBE? That’s a common military term meaning, “overcome by events.” Every integrator has been there, done that, and has at least one T-shirt that says so. It’s a far more common problem than most folks care to admit. Here’s how it often comes about: the integration starts off great and has a successful pre-close integration planning phase, which sets up a successful short-term operational integration of the business, synergies and steady-state operations.

We recently introduced the term “deal-count paradox” to highlight the condition of sophisticated acquirers with lots of deal-count experience who still struggle with fundamental disconnects in M&A processes and skill sets that lead to M&A value erosion. (See Don’t Fumble on the Goal Line.)
